Amelia Stevens

Defined by an understated visual language, essential material palette and subtle wit, Amelia Stevens’ London-based practice encompasses the design and production of objects, furniture and scenography with an architectural and luxury design sensibility.

Amelia Stevens’ design praxis began with the study of Architecture [University of Cambridge], during which she developed a profound interest in design at the intersection of architecture, interiors, furniture and objects. Subsequently working within fashion and the luxury sector as a set designer and design writer, in the Spring of 2021 Amelia established her creative practice designing and producing objects and furniture pieces with a luxury design sensibility. Meticulously crafted by skilled makers across London, from a 12kg stainless steel standing ashtray to a two person floor bolster cushion, her works are titled with tongue-in-cheek 20th century literary references.Exhibiting both locally and internationally across Europe and North America, her appreciation of diverse artistic and cultural disciplines sees her interests extending beyond small scale objects and furniture towards scenography, interiors and architectural design.

A nod to French essayist and novelist Georges Perec’s Species of Spaces and Other Pieces (1974), Amelia’s Species of ______ and Other Pieces Collection (2024) develops upon her conscious use of materials of the highest quality. Thoughtfully constructed of wholly replaceable parts, which can be assembled, disassembled and reassembled, this Collection intends to make only the smallest of interventions in its structural materials. Notwithstanding their current composition as furniture pieces, each piece retains the inherent value of its raw materials and ultimately exists as a material inventory that could be rearranged for a plethora of other functions ‘correct for the time’.

A nod to Austrian philosophical writer Robert Musil’s unfinished fiction novel The Man Without Qualities (1930), Amelia’s ______ Without Qualities Collection (2021-) is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the indecision and incoherency that often riddles the design process. Just as Musil’s fictional character, Ulrich, imagines a form that is ‘solid and impressive’ before it quickly occurs to him that he could just as easily design something that is ‘slim, strong and technically functional’, Amelia finds pleasure in the improbability of her designs’ slender, even delicate, bases coupled with their substantial physical weight.
