Born in 1991, Lives and works in Seoul

Artist Hyun-hee Kim borrows the form of traditional Korean furniture to record daily life in the modern era.

In particular, she pays attention to ‘Gyubang furniture’ (Gyubang means the inner space of the house), which was used in the living space of women in the past, and redefines classical beauty as a present value. She expresses her awareness of problems in her daily life, such as liberation from stereotypes surrounding gender issues and rediscovery of the value of everyday life, which are taken lightly, through furniture.

Artist Hyun-hee Kim focuses on the living space of women in the Joseon Dynasty and women's room furniture, redefining classical beauty as a modern value. Her furniture uses transparent and translucent materials to eliminate existing walls, erases the boundaries between inside and outside, and attempts to communicate with the world by breaking down the boundaries between women and men. In addition, the decorations give a thick and strong feeling and stand in the air by themselves, which shows the artist's will to stand on her own, even if she looks a little weak and insecure, rather than relying on the authority of the boundaries created by men. The artist looks back on what frames the stereotypes of social groups inherent in space form in the individual's unconscious and reinterprets furniture that reflects the lifestyle of the times to break down boundaries and create new objects.
