Soft to Hard Exhibition

I was always fascinated by the moment when a state of material transforms. I imagine putting my smaller self in these moments to observe when vapour becomes liquid, and liquid becomes solid. I fantasise about encapsulating these astonishing instants in the objects I design.

One of my ongoing interests is applying these transformations to a making process so that the material becomes stronger and sturdier most efficiently. The exhibition ‘Soft to Hard’ presents a new project ‘, Hardened Mesh Project’, which shows my ongoing curiosity in materials.

Hardened Mesh Project

Mesh is a sheet material that can be bent and manipulated in certain ways, and the shape stays fixed like working with wire. It is as easy as working with paper, but also that much fragile. The shapes of the objects are designed to highlight these variable characteristics of mesh. Just as using fabric or paper, the folding technique of using patterns was a strong reference for designing the objects.

Getting away from carefully constructed shapes, I wanted it to be more light, intuitive and playful. Applying several layers of polyurethane rubber on the soft skeleton of an object transforms it and gives function. This process is rough but quick and non-toxic, so it makes the objects safe and stable enough to drink right out of it and tough enough that it wouldn’t break while it’s used for the purpose it's designed for. This project is a series of objects resulting from the synthesis of this unique material and process.
